We (Sewalanka Foundation and
Green Circle Eco-Farm)
would like to invite you &
your friends to a simple &
unique event to celebrate
World Environment Day: The
inaugural Sewalanka Organic
Food Fair
Sunday 5th June 2011
Venue: Green Circle
Eco-Farm, 41 Neo Tiew Road.
Basis for the Fair:
My husband, Soo and I,
Evelyn of Green
Circle Eco-Farm were hosted
by the Sewalanka Foundation
(www.sewalanka.org)
when we visited Sri Lanka in
February 2011. We were very
impressed with their work
which is guided by this
philosophy:
"If you
give me a fish, you
have fed me for
a day.
If you teach
me to
fish, you
have fed me until the water
is polluted and
the beach is taken for
hotel development.
But if
you teach me to organize, then
whatever the challenge, I
can join
together with
my community and we will
develop our
own solution."
Sewalanka Foundation is a Sri
Lankan development
organization which enhances the
capacity of disadvantaged rural
communities to identify and to
address their own development
needs. Through its own
professionals and its links with
other service providers, the
foundation coordinates training
and support services that
contribute to the economically
viable, socially just, and
ecologically sustainable
development of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is now peaceful
after many years of civil
war. Development for the
country can now commence in
earnest. Agriculture has
been, and can continue to
be, the main economic
activity and the Sewalanka
Foundation is working to
provide help to
disadvantaged, poor farmers.
Developing an agricultural
economy based on small-scale
farmers is a much better
alternative for the country to
balance large-scale
farming or manufacturing,
which will destroy the land
and incur a heavier and
larger debt for the
country's future generation.
Small-scale farmers who own
their land are still in
existence today in Sri Lanka
and helping and
encouraging them can
only mean less disruption to
Sri Lankan livelihood and
indigenous culture. When
Organic Farming is
practised, the land and its
people will be saved from
pollution.
But developing a small-scale
farming industry will not be
successful unless there is a
market tfor the goods. The
farmers need to make their
livelihood worthwhile. These
farmers also aspire for
a sustainable form
of living. This is where
richer developed countries
like Singapore can help, by
buying and creating a market
for their products. Hence
the need to hold a fair to
promote Sri Lankan organic
food lovingly grown by these
small scale farmers.
And what better day than
holding it on World
Environment Day!
This fair is also to connect
you with these farms and the
farmers who produce the food
and plant materials for us.
Ecologically Yours, Evelyn
